Verdun Estate

Farm Story

Verdun Estate is in character and tradition a family business, one of the oldest farms in Prince Alfred’s Hamlet. Over the years the tradition of complete family involvement was honored, and currently it is run by the third and fourth generation of the Wolfaardt family.

It started as a mixed farming venture, as it was the norm in this region, but in 1980 it has turned its focus completely to Stone Fruit, and specifically Nectarines. With the diversity in micro-climates in the different production areas, Verdun Estate has managed to prolong their season.  They place great emphasis on varietal selections, looking for unique varieties with exceptional flavors which delivers on shelf life, yields, fruit size and that can be farmed sustainably. The company has an aggressive orchard replacement program in place and strive to compete internationally as one of the industry leaders.

Conservation and non-chemical plant protection options are also high on the company’s priority list and are continuously investigated.

The management of Verdun Estates also recognized the importance of a dedicated, skilled and committed labor force, and thus a lot of investment goes into their staff’s well-being.
